It isn't easy being green
While I was picking up my daughter up at Girl Scout Day camp at Camp Long, I ran into the mom of one of Katie's classmates. We got to talking, and I forgot myself and mentioned that I was going off to Harbin Hot Springs to go to throat singing camp . *Damn* There goes another lost play date for Katie. It reminded me of a fellow fan who took his new girl friend to her first convention. At some point, she turned to him and said, "Your friends just don't make small talk, do they?"

Huh? I don't get it -- why wouldn't they want their kid to come round to play with the smart, personable girl with the interesting parents?

(Okay, just how many sigmas off normal are we? I honestly don't understand why that would be smile-nod-and-back-away territory.)

We - your LJ and other friends - we love you, Amy, throat singing and all. (As I said, I'm curious!) We'll play with Katie, too.

I don't know if my voice box could keep up with the *neeerurrr* throat singing.

No, it's not a small talking crowd.

It makes for interesting (and sometimes painful) interactions with the outside world.

I've learnt some small talking skills, but they aren't all that strong.

I don't understand, either. Tuvan throat singing is amazing. I know from observation that there are good Girl Scout moms out there, so maybe understanding throat singing will have to become the "bar" to cross to get in with Katie and you.

Cubbette loves all singing.

I have to admit, I was perhaps exaggerating a trifle on the other mom's reaction to my going off to throat singing camp, but it did feel a bit like a foot through the ice moment. I love having adventures, but each one pushes me further away from "normal" and sometimes it's just plain lonely out on the fringe. Most people really arent that interested in peculiar stuff for the sake of goshwowness.

Thank god for fandom, or maybe I'd be pushing a grocery cart loaded with my posessions and talking to myself.

Just think how much you'll enjoy taking Katie up to her front door on Halloween and making appropriate sounds when the door is opened...

I think I just wore my Harbin T-shirt the other day.
I've only been there half a dozen times over the decades, but I did get to fulfill one fantasy -- I was there for a few days on the way to the SF Worldcon to watch the Perseids.
((Which trip led to my accidentally moving to the BArea for two years, but that WAS how I got to hear the Gyuto monks through the Grateful Dead's sound system when they showed up unannounced at Shoreline . . .))
